He once did the weather; now he sings 'Moon River'
Chuck Gillespie, a former Columbus TV personality, is pursuing a new career at 66: big-band singer.
It’s a later-in-life pursuit with roots in his youth.
He sang well enough in elementary school to be invited to perform once with the Cincinnati Opera. And even during his TV years, he did gigs with an area band.
Having left television and tried sales (which he disliked), Gillespie said he needed something to do — and the alternatives to singing didn't appeal to him.
“Walmart is calling," he said.
"They’re holding a place for me.”
Gillespie, now living in Titusville, Florida, will return to central Ohio to perform shows in October at the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant.
Gillespie, who grew up in Cincinnati and graduated from Ohio State University, worked in radio early in his career.
Later, he studied meteorology, not because he was intrigued by weather but because he saw it as a way to break into television.
