Justin Trudeau News: Resigns as Canada’s Prime Minister
Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on January 6, revealing that he will step down as the country’s Liberal Party leader after his successor is chosen in the coming months.
Addressing reporters outside his Ottawa residence, Trudeau explained he’s ending his nine-year tenure due to “internal battles” from within his political party.
“It’s time for a reset,” he said. “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”
The 53-year-old has faced mounting pressure to resign over his low approval ratings, which came to a head in December when Chrystia Freeland, his deputy prime minister and finance minster, abruptly quit and criticized his leadership.
